As Heard On Radio Soulwax pt. 2 (Official)

About the album

The Belgian label PIAS Recordings (Play It Again Sam) has been giving the Soulwax brothers absolute freedom for many years, even though all their foreign adventures have meant nothing but a loss for the label. This fact notwithstanding, Kenny Gates, head of PIAS, is convinced that he has struck gold with the newfound interests of the Dewaeles. He relentlessly tries to convince them to create an album in the same style as their mashups and radio shows. Stephen and David eventually give in, handing over a list of 187 tracks they want to use on the album – not thinking for a second they would get all the clearance required. Half a year, over 860 emails, 160 faxes and uncountable phone calls to 45 record companies later, the end of an administrative nightmare means the birth of their groundbreaking album, “As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt. 2″, consisting of 45 (+ 1!) tracks composed of elements from 114 different tracks. They release the album as 2manydjs, a play on a Soulwax song called Too Many DJs.

It was nothing short of a smash hit. The New York Times called it the best pop album of 2002. It ranked second on The Face‘s list of best albums of 2002. Spin called it 2002’s best novelty record. Pitchfork Media listed it as #93 on their top 200 albums of the 2000s. Finally, in 2013, it was voted best Belgian dance album ever in the Elektropedia Awards.

Video

In 2014, as part of their Radio Soulwax project, 2manydjs released a one-hour visual mix of their “As Heard On Radio Soulwax pt. 2″ album. The mix contains the full CD, along with animations of the cover artwork from the records while they are playing.

Tracklist

These are the tracks that appear on the album. We have included comments by Stephen & David, as well as clearance information (probably by Catherine Sabbe), taken from the old 2manydjs website.

00Kylie Minogue - Can’t Get You Out Of My Head (Soulwax Elektronic Mix) Comments: We did a few versions of this one. Instead of putting the vocal on top of a track that already existed, we started out from scratch and created this f*cked up electro-beat. Very hot!Clearance: This was a very hush-hush operation, because the a capella-version of the Kylie track didn’t officially exist - very confusing. Thanks to a London connection we got this remix 100% Kylie-approved.
01Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Peter Gunn (Live) Comments: It’s a perfect song to start with due to the eponymous, bombastic intro. We were looking for something to fit with “Where’s Your Head At?” and this worked perfectly.
02Basement Jaxx - Where’s Your Head At (Head-A-Pella) Comments: We already made a remix for personal use of Basement Jaxx’ “Romeo” with The Clash’s “The Magnificent Seven” but we were unable to clear The Clash’s copyrights.Clearance: We had a little difficulty with licensing the Basement Jaxx tune because they had accidentally switched two song titles on the record sleave. It took some time to figure that out.
03Peaches - Fuck The Pain Away Comments: This is just a fucking cool song and not many people know it, so it’s perfect to create a “what the fuck is that?” feeling right after the Basement Jaxx track which is much better known.Clearance: The small, independent labels never make much hassle. They just want some money and they’re happy.
04Velvet Underground - I’m Waiting For The Man Comments: An all-time favourite of ours, that’s always included in our DJ sets. It was one of the tracks that was essential for the album.Clearance: Any track by Lou Reed would’ve been a problem, but luckily he doesn’t control all the rights from the Velvet Underground catalogue. We also tried to get the copyrights to Reed’s “Viscous”, for instance, and that was a definite no-go.
05Polyester - J’Aime Regarder Les Mecs Comments: The track hardly gets used in this mix but we wanted to credit them anyway because the original is so brilliant. It’s an electro cover version of Coutin’s “J’Aime Regarder Les Filles” but obviously changed around so it’s told from a, shall we say, different viewpoint. Big up to Polyester!
06Sly & The Family Stone - Dance To The Music Comments: A very cool bit on the album, a perfect example of how you can create something totally new out of two different tracks.Clearance: We never thought “Dance To The Music’ was going to get cleared but surprisingly it wasn’t a problem - we licensed the copyrights already almost two years ago.
07Ready For The World - Oh Sheila (A Capella)
08Dakar & Grinser - I Wanna Be Your Dog We had been playing this for three years already, it’s a real classic because it started off the whole ‘new wave/electro’ hype. Our respects to DJ Hell!Clearance: No problem.
09Ural 13 Diktators - Disko Kings Comments: A super-cool, quite recent track. We always sing along to the vocoder bit, very catchy!Clearance: A bit difficult to find out who owned the master takes, but no further problems.
10Bobby Orlando - The “O” Medley Comments: He’s the man! All his songs sound exactly alike, but what a sound that is!Clearance: No one nowhere could say who owned the copyrights and when we finally found out, the guy in question had never heard of this Bobby O. megamix. Even Ben Liebrand, who actually produced the megamix, asked to let him know who owned the rights to the song.
11Felix Da Housecat - Silverscreen Shower Scene Comments: It uses the same sample that’s in the Bobby O. megamix, and it’s a song we never get bored of. Felix has got a funky approach to electronic music, a bit like Kraftwerk, and we like that.
12The Stooges - No Fun This was a mix we made a long time ago, and it’s always been a success when we play it live, so it definitely had to be on the album.Clearance: The Stooges-people gave us a hard time because they did want to license “I Want To Be Your Dog” but not “No Fun”. They came around in the end.
13Salt ‘n Pepa - Push It
14Hanayo With Jürgen Paape - Joe Le Taxi Comments: It was on one of the hard-to-find Colette-compilations first, but it was too good to be not included here as well. When we play it in the clubs, we get some pretty confused reactions from the people on the dancefloor.Clearance: We started our search in Japan but there they claimed that this was a Europe-only release. In Europe they said the exact opposite! When that was cleared out, we found out that there are three different versions of the song and the story could start all over again. It was a mess. In the end we had to send MP3s to the record companies so that they could figure out who owned what version.
15The Jets - Crush On You (A Capella) Comments: We wanted to use the “Running” track from Alan Braxe and Fred Falke but they wouldn’t give the rights. Instead we cleared the same sample they used in their song and created our own little version.Clearance: Monsieur Brax only wants to be included on ‘dance-oriented’ compilations.
16Funkacise Gang - Funkacise
17Soul Grabber - Motocross Madness
18Lil Louis And The World - French Kiss Comments: You’ve got to be a real “trainspotter” to catch this one.
19Zongamin - Serious Trouble Comments: We were big fans of his first release, “Tunnel Music”, and when we found this 12″ in London, it turned out to be even better! Apparently they were honoured to be on the album as well.Clearance: They almost let us have it for free. Almost.
20Garbage - Androgyny (Thee Glitz Mix By Felix Da Housecat) Comments: A very good remix from Felix again, a classic example of a dance track that really rocks!Clearance: Normally this is an unclearable track - which goes for everything from Garbage - but they let us have it as a favour.
21Frank Delour - Disc Jockey’s Delight Vol.2 Comments: It’s impossible to get clearance for anything from Michael Jackson, but we found this on the “Buds International” label. It’s a track that uses the “Billie Jean” groove and, quite unexpectedly, we got permission to use it.Clearance: The guys from “Buds” were very friendly. We could license any track from their catalogue. “Good choice”, they said in the end, “you guys have good taste”.
22The Residents - Kaw-liga (Prairie Mix) Comments: Basically this is (again) the same groove as “Billie Jean”, so we edited the two tracks together. It’s quite difficult to hear where one stops and the other starts. Also, everyone seems to be familiar with this track but nobody knows it’s The Residents, nor the fact that it’s a Hank Williams song.Clearance: They instantly ordered 100 copies of the mix album to give to their fan club.
23Carlos Morgan - Shake Your Body Comments: This is an old record we found at a flea market and it’s another Jackson song - a reggae version of the Jacksons 5 classic. Despite not being able to locate the performer we included it, so this way we beat the system three times.Clearance: We tracked down one Carlos Morgan in Montreal, Canada, which seemed right because the album had a Montreal address on it that turned out non-existent. But the guy (who is a now an R&B star signed to a major company) disassociated himself from the track so we were unable to clear the rights of this one.
24Alphawezen - Into The Stars (Firebirds Remix) Comments: A band we never heard of, but they use the same killer groove as in Nika Costa’s “Like A Feather” and we like that groove very much.
25Interstellar - Concepts Comments: One of the few more down tempo dance releases we liked from last year and not very well known.Clearance: Before giving clearance they first had to make up their mind about which name they would use for themselves in the future. It was either DJ Pogo or Interstellar.
26Nena - 99 Luftballons Comments: Another track that’s hard to spot, we just use a few seconds from the break in the original song.
27Destiny’s Child - Independent Women Part 1 (A Capella) Comments: Another mix we had already made some time ago, included because of the big demand there seems to be for it.Clearance: Destiny’s Child was a tough one to get. We already cleared two other Destiny’s Child songs and the people from their management were getting a bit nervous. Because this track is on the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ soundtrack they said it was impossible to license it for any compilation. But then we came across some weird tribute compilation that featured the track but re-recorded by a band called ‘The Countdown Singers’. We could’ve used that one instead but they gave it a go in the end.
2810cc - Dreadlock Holiday Clearance: No problem.
29Dolly Parton - 9 To 5 Comments: Theoretically not the most logical choice to mix into a Destiny’s Child track but this runs surprisingly smoothly, honest!Clearance: First it was okay but then they tried to take it back because there was a Dolly Parton Greatest Hits about to be released. Eventually they changed their mind back.
30Royksopp - Eple Comments: We’ve been mixing this into the Dolly Parton track for a while in our DJ sets and thought it fitted nicely on the album.Clearance: Because this was their first single release, no problem.
31Arbeid Adelt - Death Disco Comments: An instrumental cover version of the Public Image Limited song that, we think, beats the original. Also, it seemed like a good idea to include an original new wave classic between all those eighties revivalists and it’s a Belgian band, which is also cool!
32Jeans Team - Keine Melodien Feat. Mj Lan Comments: Something we discovered while playing in Germany, another classic in our DJ sets and the award for the best lyrics on the whole album!Clearance: We just had to find out if it was DJ Ian (with an “i”) or DJ Lan (with an “l”). It turned out to be MJ Lan, with an “m” and an “l”.
33Skee-lo - I Wish (A Capella) Comments: We use this a capella vocal in a quite a few mixes. We did one with “Eye Of The Tiger” from Survivor but that seemed to be a bit of a problem.Clearance: We couldn’t get the rights to “Eye Of The Tiger” because Bush Jr. used it during his election campaign and Survivor were so pissed off that they won’t let anyone use it for anything anymore.
34Maurice Fulton Presents Stress - My Gigolo Comments: An incredible deep, funky groove. It’s a perfect break.
35The Breeders - Cannonball Comments: One of the first bootleg mixes we ever did (with Skee-Lo’s “I Wish”), about four years before the album. So it couldn’t be left out.Clearance: This must be the one and only compilation ever that’s got The Breeders on it. Again, we got it as a special favour.
36The Cramps - Human Fly Comments: This is a true classic that was very necessary to have on the album. Definitely one of our favourites.
37The Wildbunch (Electric Six) - Danger! High Voltage Comments: This is a great band from Detroit which features Jack and Meg White from The White Stripes on vocals on this track. This is a very cool track. It’s funny and it rocks hard in a disco kind of way, perfect!Clearance: For weeks we could only reach the company’s answering machine, but in the end it came out that the rights were still owned by the band, so they had to have a band meeting first.
38Op:l Bastards - Don’t Bring Me Down Comments: Another discovery from our time in Germany, although it’s a Finnish band. Dave’s a big ELO fan so there was no use in trying to keep this from the album.Clearance: Their record company first couldn’t find the track in their database because the band changed their name from “Opel Bastards” to “Op:l Bastards”.
39Adult - Hand To Phone Comments: We couldn’t use the Carl Craig remix for some reason, so we re-edited the whole song in a way that resembled his mix.Clearance: First there was a problem because we accidentally asked for a Carl Cox mix, then it seemed that Carl Craig didn’t want anything to do with DJ compilation that also included Dolly Parton.
40Vitalic - La Rock 01 Comments: This is as classic as they come! It’s some sort of “metal house” track from France. This gives me the same kick as any track from Kyuss or something. Proof that dance music can be quite rock’n roll.
41Queen Of Japan - I Was Made For Loving You Comments: Another one in the “funny covers” series. They also do a great version of Laidback’s “White Horse” but this one is just as cool.
42New Order - The Beach Comments: It’s the B-side from ‘Blue Monday’ and basically it’s the instrumental with a lot of swooshes and echo’s on it. We like to fuck around with this track, in this case we put the a capella version of Detroit Grand Pubahs’ “Sandwiches” on top of it.Clearance: At first the record company were willing to license “Blue Monday” but not this one, until I talked some sense in them by pointing out it’s basically the same track.
43Detroit Grand Pubahs - Sandwiches (A Capella)
44Lords Of Acid - I Sit On Acid (Soulwax Remix) Comments: A remix we did for our fellow countrymen, and so the only official release of ourselves that’s on the album. We are really content with the results and because the 12″ is hard to find we used it in the mix.
45Streamer Feat Private Thoughts In Public Places - Start Button Comments: This track was just begging to be the closing song after these 60 minutes of mayhem

Track 0 is a hidden track that can be found by rewinding the album until before the first track.

Many of these tracks appear on the album as mashups.

Tracks that couldn’t be cleared

And finally, these tracks simply couldn’t get cleared. For most of these, the artists simply refuse to clear the copyrights for inclusion on any compilation record what-so-ever. Sometimes it’s a matter of protecting their interests, but sometimes they’re just headstrong, greedy, snobbish or who knows, jealous? Stephen & David have at several occasions hinted at the fact that some of these artists later regretted not having their track on the album, or not even having been informed of the clearance request by their respective record companies.

About the cover photo

The original artwork for As Heard On Radio Soulwax pt. 2 was done by Marc Meulemans. He took a picture made by Richard Young of Elton John giving a “two-fingered salute” while leaving Langan’s Brasserie in London and added a brown paper bag over Elton’s head in an attempt to avoid legal problems. Nonetheless, Young eventually threatened to sue over the unauthorized use of his photograph and the record was re-released, with the entire picture whited out except for the paper brown bag.

The bag became a symbol for 2manydjs and can be seen referenced in some visuals, such as the Any Minute Now video clip or the Under The Covers video.
